Navigating Female Hormonal Health: Managing Perimenopause & Menopause

By Dr. Atousa Faraz, Naturopathic Doctor, Adelaide Health Clinic

What is Perimenopause and Menopause?

Female hormonal imbalances can lead to various symptoms, especially during perimenopause and menopause. Common symptoms include:

  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Mood swings
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Decreased libido
  • Weight gain, particularly around the abdomen

Perimenopause involves fluctuating hormone levels, which may result in irregular periods, heavier periods, iron deficiency anemia, increased fatigue and irritability. This period can begin in late 30s for majority of women and last up to 10 years before reaching menopause.

Menopause is defined as absence of a menstrual cycle for 12 consecutive months. For most women it typically occurs in their late 40s to early 50s. As women transition into menopause, estrogen levels drop sharply, leading to further exacerbation of symptoms like night sweats, memory problems, weight gain and joint pain. The experience varies widely among individuals, making effective symptom management essential.

How can we help

Our naturopathic doctor, Dr. Atousa Faraz BSc (Hon), ND takes a holistic approach to healthcare, focusing on natural treatments for hormonal imbalances as well as prescription medications such as Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT). She conducts comprehensive evaluations, including medical history and hormone testing to identify issues. Dr. Faraz ND will create customized BHRT plans that may involve bio-identical hormones like estrogen and progesterone, nutritional guidance, and lifestyle changes. She may also recommend natural remedies such as herbal supplements and vitamins to support hormonal health.

Bio identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)

Bio identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) aims to restore hormonal balance and alleviate symptoms related to deficiencies of estrogen and progesterone from aging or other conditions. The timeline for recovery and management with BHRT varies by individual, depending on the severity of symptoms and underlying conditions. Some may experience relief within a few weeks, while others may require several months to see significant improvements. Regular follow-up appointments with Dr. Faraz ND are essential to monitor hormone levels and adjust treatment as needed.

Supporting Hormonal Health: Home Strategies and BHRT for Women

In addition to professional treatment, individuals can support their hormonal health at home. A healthy diet should include whole foods with adequate amount of protein and fiber instead of processed food. Regular exercise helps reduce stress and improve overall health and wellbeing. Stress management techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, and meditation can help regulate stress hormones like cortisol. BHRT is especially relevant during specific life stages for women. They often seek it during perimenopause and menopause, typically in their late 40s to early 50s. Understanding BHRT and its benefits enables individuals to take proactive steps toward optimal health and wellbeing.

Risks and Benefits

While BHRT can offer benefits, it also carries risks and potential adverse effects.  Some individuals may experience unwanted reactions, and there may be an increased risk of certain health issues based on personal health factors. It can also be contraindicated depending on the medical history. It is important to discuss these risk factors with Dr. Faraz ND before starting treatment. Collaboration with your family doctor or primary healthcare provider is essential for safely managing BHRT and ensuring comprehensive care tailored to individual health needs.
