Understanding Athletic Therapy with Kaitlyn Swartz

Earlier this year, the Adelaide Spa added Kaitlyn Swartz to their team. Kaitlyn is a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) and Certified Athletic Therapist – the first athletic therapist to join the Spa. She focuses on a holistic approach to finding and treating the root cause of her clients’ conditions and pain, and not just temporarily reducing the signs and symptoms associated with their pain and condition.

But what is the difference between massage therapy and athletic therapy? Are they different treatments? Are they complimentary? There is so much we didn’t know, so we decided to sit down with Kaitlyn to ask her a few important questions about the two and her practice.

How are Athletic Therapy and Massage Therapy different?

Certified Athletic Therapists (ATs) are experts in rapid rehabilitation of orthopedic conditions – the muscles, bones, and joints – specializing in treating sports injuries. They are able to assess and evaluate your injury based on the sport you play, and determine how to get you back into the game as soon as possible. These therapists are most well-known for their work on the field of play (soccer field, basketball court, football field, etc.) but they also effectively treat patients in clinics and spas as well.

On the other hand, Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) can address your body’s musculature problems. They can assess and treat tight and injured muscles; they are more focused on the treatment of soft tissue conditions.

What’s involved in an Athletic Therapy session? (Is there anything that you do that’s different?)

At the Adelaide Spa, athletic therapy is an add-on to a massage therapy appointment. Kaitlyn can add 15 or 30 minutes of AT to any massage appointment. Therapy will include education and exercises for injury prevention and tips on lifestyle factors that can help you get back to doing what you love sooner.

Importantly, the first appointment will need to be 30 minutes of AT in order to include an assessment. A comprehensive assessment will be done to find and treat the root cause of the condition, in order to prevent just temporarily reducing the signs and symptoms associated with the condition. A minimum of 30 minutes of Swedish massage will also be incorporated to treat the soft tissues of the body and allow you to leave the treatment feeling confident we addressed the root cause of the condition.

After a session, you will receive a receipt for Athletic Therapy and Massage Therapy.

What type of people should consider Athletic Therapy? (i.e. just athletes, those who are physically active, others?)

Most people believe that athletic therapy is just for athletes, but that’s not true! Athletic therapy is for everyone! From office workers with lower back pain or poor posture to weekend warriors and athletes. Everyone can benefit from athletic therapy.

What conditions/ailments can be treated with Athletic Therapy?

Athletic therapy can help to treat:

  • Common injuries from falls, daily activities, and sports
  • Pre-surgery & post-surgery rehabilitation
  • Chronic and reoccurring conditions
  • Neck and shoulder pain caused by poor desk posture 
  • Lower back pain - herniated disc, sciatica
  • Rotator cuff injuries 
  • Repetitive strain injuries

When can we visit you at the Spa? Is there anything we need to know before coming in for an appointment?

My hours at the Adelaide Spa are:

  • Tuesdays & Fridays: 11:00am – 7:00pm
  • Wednesdays & Thursdays: 8:00am – 2:00pm

We want you to be comfortable! And remember, clients can receive receipts for both Athletic Therapy and Massage Therapy to submit.
