Convictions loosely held

Convictions loosely held

Living Well

Convictions are powerful things. Where there is certainty and commitment there is forward momentum that ensures action and progress.

In the same breath, the world is changing so rapidly. And while words like “closure” and “lockdown” can imply pauses and stagnation, this pandemic has both forced and encouraged us to be more adaptive and nimbler. To do this successfully, one needs to be openminded. Without getting frozen by too many questions and uncertainty.

As leaders we have responsibilities. I am a leader as a parent. I am a leader as a trainer. I need to make some pretty vital decisions quite quickly. I assess immediate needs, the current environment, and combine those with my intuition (which presumably is governed by past experiences and that oh so powerful “gut”) to make action plans and move on them with conviction.

And then the loosely held part comes into play:

Being prepared to pivot in case your decision was the wrong one. Changing course quickly and thoroughly creates minimal if any collateral damage. It can gain you the new allies and wisdoms that come from taking a less familiar path. This takes a certain kind of courage, humility, and self-awareness. You need to acknowledge your biases, become a better listener, be more curious, and comfortable with being “wrong”.

I’ve been working in my industry for over 28 years. And lately I’ve begun to question how strongly I should be holding a number of my convictions.

As I share my thoughts and insights over the next few weeks I hope for a couple of things:

  1. That you will find my musings and new discoveries interesting, and when applicable, helpful.
  2. That you will explore some strongly held convictions of your own.
