The Toronto Athletic Club would like to send out a big warm welcome to the newest addition to our swim trainer team, Laura Lehman.
Laura comes packed with nearly a decade’s worth of experience as an instructor. Anyone can claim that they don’t remember a time where they weren’t in the water but Laura has the experience to back that claim. For over 10+ years, Laura has trained and participated in multiple triathlons and has the hardware to prove it. Competing in her first 70.3 (half Ironman) she finished on the podium accepting a bronze medal finish!
Here’s what Laura had to say about that experience:
“I think my biggest accomplishment would have to be my first 70.3. It was such an excellent experience. I felt like I could've kept going! I crossed the finish line with a smile on my face, zero pain- and the cherry on top- they placed a bronze medal around my neck. I'm so proud of this because I had trained for it completely on my own- creating my entire workout plan working around a busy schedule that had me working on average 70 hours a week. With the exception of masters swim, I did all of my workouts on my own. If that meant waking up at 3:30AM to go hit the pavement before the sun rose that's what I did. I had just bounced back from a long and drawn out Achilles injury which is why zero pain while training and racing was unbelievable. It was definitely one of my favourite memories and most proud moments in triathlon.”
After accomplishing that spectacular finish, Laura has her sights on a new goal. In July, she will be participating in Ironman Lake Placid! Other notable competitions she is hoping to participate in are the Toronto Island Endurance Swim, Guelph Lakes II and The Scotiabank Half Marathon. The thrill of testing one’s capabilities in competition after all the hours spent training clearly has a firm grasp on Laura and she loves every minute of it.
“Swimming is an incredible full-body workout. It's one of the best cardiovascular exercises for all ages; all skill levels and is easy on all joints in the body. I enjoy instructing because I'm really passionate about proper technique and want to help members prevent injuries. I also want people to get excited about triathlons! A lot of our population can run and ride a bike, but are terrified of the water... I want to change that and show you how enjoyable swimming can be while providing an amazing workout.”
Laura has a small group triathlon swim training class on Saturdays from 8:30 am – 10am. Whether it’s your first triathlon or first Ironman, Laura will train you to become more efficient with your energy in the water.
Laura’s bag of tricks isn’t exclusive to being in the water as she’s also a sports reporter and television host- so keep a look out for her!
