It’s a common fall-back when we walk off the green after a summer round of golf – a high score, or a low one, had to do with the clubs in our hands. Never mind our own abilities, or how much practice we put in on the range, or how many lessons we had beforehand.
But talk to people who custom fit golfers -- so they have the right driver, fairway wood, iron, wedge, even putter, in their hands -- and you’ll fast conclude: maybe it is the equipment I am using.
If you are scoring poorly, and play one or two times per week, chances are your equipment isn’t suited for you. Better scoring means in large part having the right equipment for you.
Custom fitters will fit according to size, speed and ability.
Among the major golf equipment manufacturers out there, TaylorMade ranks at the top in terms of the equipment fitting program for golfers (TaylorMade Performance Fitting Labs are located in Woodbridge, as well as Glen Abbey Golf Club).
In terms of what’s new on the TaylorMade front for this season, the No. 1 and No. 2 golfers in the world – Jason Day and Dustin Johnson – are currently using these clubs:
• M1 Driver, including a personal fit system for trajectory control and ball flight
• M2 Fairway, including lighter carbon composite crown, producing a lower centre of gravity for better distance
• Tour Preferred X Golf Ball – multi-layered for better flight control
Upgrading your golf bag with a few key custom-fitted clubs may make all the difference next time you're on the links. Or at the very least, now you've got a new excuse for that double bogey!
