For the Love of Bikes: Cycling at the Adelaide

We sat down with Malcolm, a Business Development Executive at a multinational professional services firm, and Tylar, a CPA at a downtown firm, to talk about the journey that brought them to the Adelaide. Both are regular cyclers at the Adelaide and, although they joined for very different reasons, they continue to ride for surprisingly similar ones.  

What brought you to the Adelaide?

Tylar: I was frustrated with my old fitness routine because it didn't fit with my lifestyle. I was looking for an enjoyable workout that I could do consistently. When I visited the Adelaide Club, its location was attractive, convenient and its fitness class hours worked with my busy work schedule. Everything from the amenities, to the staff and the very first class I went to, made me feel welcome.

Malcolm: Previously, I was a member at the Toronto Athletic Club and trained there for my first IRONMAN. Shortly after finishing my first one, I was introduced to the Adelaide and joined because I met experienced triathletes and trainers that I really liked and knew they would help keep me motivated to train for my second IRONMAN triathlon.

Why Ride at the Adelaide?

1. Superb instructors

Tylar: The instructors all come from diverse backgrounds and offer classes for every level of experience, interest and intensity. I personally love Video Hits Ride with Lori ever since my coworker introduced me to the Monday 6:30pm class. I remember walking in and Lori immediately made me feel at ease, she helped set up my bike right away. Her outgoing personality makes the class so much fun, not to mention her fantastic tracklist. She keeps me going back.

Malcolm: I enjoy learning from experienced triathletes like Blair Larsen and James Corcoran, who both teach and train at the Adelaide. They’ve both helped me greatly to complete my two IRONMAN. Crossing that finish line in Lake Placid IRONMAN race still remains one of my most proudest and cherished memories. I’m grateful for the invaluable instruction that helped me get there. I call Blair ‘the boss’. He's taught me so much and has grown my strength on the sports I focus on now, like mountain biking and skiing.

2. Good times riding

Malcolm: The Adelaide has many convenient classes that go from the mornings and well into the evenings. They’ve always fit with my work hours – and they’re fun. Good music, friendly people, state-of-the-art bikes – what else could you ask for?

Tylar: Instead of dreading my cardio routine, I look forward to showing up week to week because of the very robust schedule of classes at the Adelaide. Also, thanks to Lori, I’ve met a number of Club members I call friends outside of the Adelaide. We’re all concerned about each other’s fitness goals and it’s the community that keeps all of us going.

“Lori is the only person who can get the typical Bay Street type to do silly things in class to make the class more fun.”

3. Spinning for success

Malcolm: Cycling helps me maintain a high level of health and fitness and it helps me accomplish my long-term goals. I’m able to regularly go mountain-biking with my teenage son, and I’m in great shape for skiing. I’m 58 and don’t feel much different than I did 20 years ago. Also, when 3:00pm rolls around at work, my energy doesn’t dip. I’m more present, alert and aware – there is no substitute for exercise and sweat equity.

“I don't workout to battle stress, but my improved well-being and mental alertness is a positive byproduct of going to the Adelaide. I'm motivated to feel good - that's the reason I come.”

Caption: Blair, or as Malcolm calls him "the boss," has been teaching at the Adelaide since 2000. Malcolm says he looks up to Blair as he has a holistic approach and really values those he trains.

Tylar: For me, it’s about confidence, consistency and community. I rarely miss a class, and when I do members ask me why. I’m also thankful for every class because it’s a great source of stress relief. When work gets busy, it’s easy to let exercise slide, but I never regret making the time to go.
