Take Your Golf Game to the Next Level in the Offseason

Now that fall is upon us, let's face it - the golf season is winding down. Insert sad face. For some, that would mean putting the clubs away until spring and spending your winter dreaming about the course; instead, you can use this fall and winter to assess, train smart, and strengthen your body-swing connection.

First things first, there is a big difference between added sugars in boxed/bagged/packaged foods such as candy, pop, cookies, etc vs natural sugars in whole foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

How Alcohol Consumption is Related to Fat Loss

There seems to be this notion among the average gym goers that it is okay to drink certain alcoholic beverages, because they contain zero calories. Vodka and soda is the go-to that I always hear about.

Effects of Alcohol on Building Muscle

Let's just jump straight to it! If you want to build muscle, which is a tough task on it's own, you definitely want to stay away from alcohol consumption.

Alcohol will take away from muscle building for a variety of reasons. Here are a few points on why alcohol consumption is a bad idea when attempting to build muscle:

Do I Need To Go Gluten Free?

Gluten (a protein) can be found in wheat, barley and rye.

With so many processed foods on the market today, it can also be found hiding in salad dressings, condiments, deli meats and even candy. This makes giving up gluten a bit more tricky, and why should we do that in the first place?

Adelaide Club Instructor Spotlight: Karey Spady

Adelaide Club Instructor Spotlight: Karey Spady
Posted: May 24, 2017

Karey is a staple instructor on the Adelaide roster. Teaching Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, members love her positive attitude and class programming. Be sure to check out her new classes ‘Xtreme Measures’, a mix of cardio and stretching along with ‘Definition’, a strength based class.

We caught up with Karey and asked her a few fitness questions below:

Q. What’s your favourite way to sweat?
A. My all-time favorite way to sweat is walking on a hot sunny beach somewhere!  But in the gym, it would be some old school skipping.  I use to do a lot of boxing training.  My favorite things were working the speed bag, double end bag, and skipping.  Something about connecting the rhythm patterns together seamlessly, is very satisfying.

Q. What is your training style?
A. My coaching style in very hands on.  Most exercises, one can’t see themselves doing it.  I find that making small, gentle adjustments to my students form, helps them understand what they should be feeling, instead of just imitating what they see me do in a demonstration.

Q. What classes do you teach at the club? Give us a little description of how you structure the class.
A. Lower body Lowdown & Definition are low impact classes. To create good form, we use light weights and are careful that no pressure enters vulnerable areas like the neck, lower back or knees.   We also do some movements that elevate the heart rate into the fat burning zone.

Fab Abs is a 30 min class where we concentrate on isolating the abdominals in groups.

Body blast & Overhaul are similar, in that we alternate cardio drills with strength exercises.  Over Haul is done circuit style and is 30 min.  Body Blast is done as a group for 45 min.

My newest class is Xtreme Measures.  I have designed it to alleviate the wears of sitting at a desk.  20 min of simple cardio drills to get the blood flowing and the muscles firing, then a slow transition into deep stretches for 20 min. Focusing on opening the hips, and lengthening the hamstrings restores much needed movement.

Q. Best thing about being an instructor?
A. The people in class are so fun and delightful…and I get to interact with them every day!   This will be my 26th year teaching group classes.  Seeing my students progress inspires me daily.  Hearing their stories of how happy they feel, makes me feel lucky, to be a part of someone else’s journey.

Q. Best piece of advice you’ve received?
A. “The worst loneliness is not to be comfortable with yourself.” ~Mark Twain

Q. What's in your gym bag?

A. My gym bag, is whatever purse that I’m using that day! LOL My athletic gear stays in my locker. ;)

What members are saying about Karey:

“...I must say Karey is one of my all-time favourites.  I have never been to classes quite like hers.  I don't want her class to end, she makes me want to go back for more and look forward to the next day's class
I'VE NEVER EXPERIENCED THAT WITH ANYONE ELSE!!  I wish all my friends were a member at the gym (they don't live close enough) so that I can show her off.  She is well spoken, gives clear instructions, very informative (I love her tips!), funny and fun.  I truly enjoyed every class.!!! She's awesome!”

“Karey is an amazing instructor”
