I’ve been thinking a lot about diets lately: Mayo, Keto, Paleo, Oreo…(kidding about that last one). But it’s all overwhelming enough to make you want to run and hide in a bag of those simple, black and white cookies!
In about five weeks, we’re going to get inundated with a list of the "Best Diets for 2018". Well, guess what: The very best diet for you is yours. The one you can manage, enjoy, and ultimately maintain. And so, for the next few blogs, I’d like to simply present one—not seven or 12—but one solid idea for something you can try tweaking in your diet. We are real people, with real lives. We need real, simple, and sustainable solutions.
Food Tweak #1:
Eat more vegetables. That’s it. Don’t stress about whether they are boiled, fried, fresh, raw, or frozen, locally-sourced, or organic. Not today. Today, simply figure out how to incorporate more of them into your day. (Flip back to my last post for a simple recipe for a yummy kale salad).
I’ve also been thinking about getting taller.
Ever notice that when someone suggests you stand up straighter your reaction is to jam your shoulder blades back and arch your sternum to the sky? Your shoulder girdle is only part of your body. Only extending through your t-spine (mid-back) and shifting your upper torso weight back past your center of gravity can have negative implications for the rest of the joints and muscles in your body.
Instead, try getting taller from your pelvis.: Stand up. Take a moment to feel where you pelvis naturally sits. Tailbone swaying back (anterior pelvic tilt)? Pelvis tucked under (posterior pelvic tilt)? Try, ever so slightly bringing the pelvis to a more vertical or neutral position, using your butt and ab muscles to help you. And then, stack your vertebrae and ultimately your shoulders over top of that slightly shifted pelvis. Think “long”: lots of space between the vertebrae. How to you feel? Taller, I hope!
Do vegetables count in cake?! Once in a while, absolutely. I don’t get too twisted about buying organic, but I have small children who love carrots and apples. So I do buy the organic versions of those, which sometimes means I have a bounty of bruised apples and flaccid carrots in my crisper. Apple Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese icing anyone?! Oh yeah...
