5 Minutes with Meg: Surprises

I've been thinking a lot about...the power of the unexpected. We spend - I think - too much time focused on the future and not enough time engaged in the journey. There's lots of evidence to suggest living more of your life in the moment leads to a richer, healthier, more fulfilled life. But I digress.

Molecular You: What you need to know about the Sport Medicine Clinic's new program

What if we set our goals based on the scientific evidence of our body’s needs? What if we checked our biochemistry to see what was out of whack and needed fixing first? Wouldn’t there be more incentive to stick to our goals if we knew that we could improve our performance, address a nutritional deficiency, or mitigate specific risks?

Migraines, Headaches, & Concussions: How Cranial Osteopathy Can Help

Cranial osteopathy is a subtle treatment using a very light touch to "listen" to the messages communicated by the body, pinpointing areas of dysfunction and restriction which, in turn, contribute to compromised functioning of the body. This treatment can benefit those suffering from: headaches, migraines, concussions, stress, anxiety, and depression, among others.

I've been thinking a lot about...your heart.

The muscle. The sentiment. And how high intensity interval training positively impacts both. Many love to lift... many love to go for long runs... dance like no one's watching... But how often do we ensure we're driving our heart rate up high enough that we can't sustain the pace for longer than 30-90 seconds?

Finally, Canada has a new and improved Food Guide!

Canada's new food guide - launched on January 22, 2019 - has some big changes. Over the years, the food guide has seen minor updates and changes, but this is, by far, the biggest change we have seen since 2007, with the new guide better reflecting today's society.

A Mom's Journey Back to the Gym

After having kids, Jessica, an actuary in downtown Toronto, realized, like many other parents, that she never had "me" time in the evenings and wanted to get back into the gym. So, she returned to the Adelaide Club in 2017, adding midday workouts to her schedule. Originally drawn to the Club because of its stellar downtown location, she has stayed because of the Club's wonderful Members, finding a great under and over 30 crowd to connect with.

...New Year's Resolutions...

We have an unfriendly term in my industry called "Expectancy Violation". It describes the phenomena of people having expectations about what exercising will do for them, and then those expectations are not realized. The research indicates that this is common: people begin an exercise program with mad hopes and dreams, and when things don't go quite right, they get frustrated, grow despondent, and give up.

Haven't Set Your Resolutions Yet? There's Still Time...

This is the year I'm going to stick to my New Year's Resolution! Does that sound familiar? Do you set new goals every year (maybe even reusing the same goals you set last year) only to see January come and go with the same old habits still in place? Don't get discouraged. You are definitely not alone - in fact - you're probably part of the majority!

Celebrating the Adelaide's Community with Winville

When Winville first came to the Adelaide Club, he was driven by a desire to focus on his personal fitness, quickly joining the Club’s running group – which he’s been a member of ever since. And his reasons for remaining a member today? They don’t deviate from that original desire much; he’s now focused on staying in shape and maintaining his active lifestyle.

Setting Your New Year's Resolutions

I’ve spent the last month asking my clients and class participants if they are making New Year’s resolutions and I was surprised to hear that most aren’t. When I probed to find out why, the most common answer was “They don’t work.  I always fail so why bother?”

Meet Rob: 50 Years Old & Running a Marathon a Month

Rob has always loved to set goals; every year on his birthday he sets a new goal for himself and he’s a big fan of New Year’s resolutions. 10 years ago, when he turned 40, Rob entered into a 50-mile race in Haliburton. This race was meant to be a great way to spend his time and would encourage him to continue to exercise as if he were younger – but, little did he know, that was only the beginning.

I've been thinking a lot about...

...the "Most Wonderful Time of the Year..."?!?

It can be the most wonderful time of the year, but, it can also be more hectic, stressful, tough, and lonely for many. So, here are a few, unfinished, imperfect, tinsel covered lifelines I'd like to extend to you. I hope you find a few of them helpful.

FOOD

I’ve been thinking a lot about diets lately: Mayo, Keto, Paleo, Oreo…(kidding about that last one). But it’s all overwhelming enough to make you want to run and hide in a bag of those simple, black and white cookies!

In about five weeks, we’re going to get inundated with a list of the "Best Diets for 2018".  Well, guess what: The very best diet for you is yours.  The one you can manage, enjoy, and ultimately maintain. And so, for the next few blogs, I’d like to simply present one—not seven or 12—but one solid idea for something you can try tweaking in your diet. We are real people, with real lives. We need real, simple, and sustainable solutions.

Food Tweak #1:

Eat more vegetables. That’s it.  Don’t stress about whether they are boiled, fried, fresh, raw, or frozen, locally-sourced, or organic. Not today. Today, simply figure out how to incorporate more of them into your day. (Flip back to my last post for a simple recipe for a yummy kale salad).

POSTURE

I’ve also been thinking about getting taller.

Ever notice that when someone suggests you stand up straighter your reaction is to jam your shoulder blades back and arch your sternum to the sky? Your shoulder girdle is only part of your body.  Only extending through your t-spine (mid-back) and shifting your upper torso weight back past your center of gravity can have negative implications for the rest of the joints and muscles in your body.

Instead, try getting taller from your pelvis.: Stand up. Take a moment to feel where you pelvis naturally sits. Tailbone swaying back (anterior pelvic tilt)?  Pelvis tucked under (posterior pelvic tilt)?  Try, ever so slightly bringing the pelvis to a more vertical or neutral position, using your butt and ab muscles to help you. And then, stack your vertebrae and ultimately your shoulders over top of that slightly shifted pelvis.  Think “long”: lots of space between the vertebrae. How to you feel? Taller, I hope!

MORE FOOD

Do vegetables count in cake?!  Once in a while, absolutely. I don’t get too twisted about buying organic, but I have small children who love carrots and apples. So I do buy the organic versions of those, which sometimes means I have a bounty of bruised apples and flaccid carrots in my crisper.  Apple Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese icing anyone?!  Oh yeah...
