IMPROVE PERFORMANCE AND PREVENT INJURY
The Functional Movement Screen (FMS), developed by Physical Therapist Gray Cook, is a systematic approach to assessing overall body mechanics. During the FMS, Therapists and/or Personal Trainers assess seven specific movement patterns that are necessary in order to perform efficient human movement. The movements are able to expose our weaknesses and imbalances. Even at basic levels of movement significant compensations can exist.
THE 7 FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENTS
- Deep Squat
- Hurdle Step
- In-Line Lunge
- Shoulder Mobility
- Push-up
- Active Straight Leg Raise
- Rotational Stability
High-performance athletes and weekend warriors alike have the capability to perform high level activities; however, their performance may be inefficient due to weak links in their fundamental movements. The body will work around these weak links through compensation patterns resulting in dysfunctional movements, energy leaks and a decrease in performance increasing the opportunity for injury. By ignoring these movement dysfunctions, we are ultimately training fitness on top of dysfunction and dramatically increasing the risk of injury. The body will always sacrifice movement quality for quantity. We need to eliminate these limitations and imbalances in order to produce efficient, pain free movements.
MOVEMENT SCREEN IS ABLE TO DETERMINE IF:
- Movement is Painful- referred to a therapist at the TAC Sport Medicine Clinic for further assessment
- Unable to perform movement- a mobility or stability problem may exist and further assessment through a therapist at the TAC Sport Medicine Clinic may be required
- Able to perform movement but compensations are present- corrective exercise strategies are implemented
- No Compensations- Movement is considered functional
An easy way to improve performance, strength and health is by discovering your FMS score. The simple grading system provides the therapist with an understanding of your personal movement deficiencies. From the results we are able to customize an individualized corrective exercise program based on your imbalances. By customizing your workout based on your individual needs you will be able to get the most out of your exercise routine.
